22 December 2017 – Correction of inaccurate reporting about same sex marriage legislation affecting welfare payments

Several media outlets have incorrectly reported that the Department of Human Services is using the recent legalisation of same sex marriage in Australia to recover welfare overpayments.

The department has recognised same-sex relationships in the same way as different sex relationships since 2009.

As such, we are not taking any action to review same-sex relationships (either married or de facto) since the passage of the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Bill 2017.
