June 14 is World Blood Donor Day. The Department of Human Services has been supporting the Australian Red Cross Blood Service since 2007, saving thousands of lives through the donation of blood, plasma and platelets.
The department is part of Red25, a unique donating program run by the Australian Red Cross Blood Service which encourages community groups, schools and workplaces to coordinate blood drives or group donation bookings. Red25 works toward ensuring that 25% of Australia’s blood donations are secured.
In 2015, the department made 2,517 donations of Blood, Plasma and Platelets through the Australian Red Cross Blood Service Red 25 which helped save the lived of 7,551 people.
Staff at the department donate for many different reasons. Hover your mouse over the images below to find out why these staff donate, and watch the video for even more information.
Jessica: “I donate because it’s a small thing I can do that will make a big difference in someone else’s life. Even though needles aren’t great, it’s worth a little discomfort.”
Guin: “I donate both whole blood and plasma. I believe that if you can help others and you are in a position to do so, you should do it!”
Nev: “I’ve donated over 80 times since the 1970’s. Donating blood is a good feeling, as it’s not often you get to help people so directly and dramatically.”
Alanna: “ After I had my daughter I required a blood transfusion, and I realised how important donating was. If I was living in another country I may not have survived.”
Will: “I donate because I’ve seen the benefits first hand. With complications after the birth of my 2nd child, blood transfusions were required to keep my wife alive.”
Tina: “I started donating when my mother became ill as we have the same blood type. I always hoped she may eventually receive some of my donated blood.”
Chris: “I donate blood because it’s something practical and significant that I can do to pay forward just a small fraction of the good fortune I enjoy to people who need it.”
Cathy: “I donate blood because I can. It’s no big deal giving it, but it’s a really big deal for the people receiving it. Knowing I’m helping others in need is a great feeling.”
