Robert Tedesco is thriving after landing a position in the Dandelion Programme, a three-year traineeship that allows people on the autism spectrum to use their IT skills and gain employment.

The Dandelion Programme is a partnership between the Department of Human Services, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Danish organisation, Specialisterne.

Robert has a Bachelor in Engineering (Civil and Structural) from the University of Adelaide but has had, in the past, a tough time finding employment.

But that all changed when he was accepted into the Dandelion Programme.

“A member of my family who worked for the department told me about the Dandelion initiative. I applied, and within 2 weeks I was accepted into a one day workshop for the programme,” Robert explained.

“A few days later I was requested to attend a four-week long training and assessment with a group of other people. The assessment was designed to help me learn what a Test Analyst does in a way that was enjoyable and engaging.

“At the end of the training and assessment I was offered a permanent position,” the 24-year-old said.

Robert says he enjoys working full-time in a team environment and the ever-changing challenges that come with the role.

“I work as a System Test Analyst which involves navigating through a software system, analysing the results of specific inputs, and comparing them to a user specification document or in some cases multiple documents that have been produced by business teams,” he explained.

Robert said he’s been able to learn a range of new skills, which will help with future employment opportunities.

“When I started in the programme I had no idea how to run or write test cases, or how to use the computer testing tools,” he said.

“Over the first few months in the programme I learnt the basics of testing and was trained to use the more specific programs as I progressed.

“Now I can handle almost any task that is given to me.”

Robert hopes to become a Project Manager in the not-too-distant future and is looking to buy a house and raise a family.

“If you have the skills and the willingness to do the job there is no reason not to apply for the Dandelion Programme, it’s been great for me.”
