National Graduate Program applications closing soon!

Current students and recent graduates are encouraged to consider a career in the Australian Public Service through the Department of Human Services’ National Graduate Program.

Project Officer, Nekol Stuart joined the department through the program’s 2016 intake and said it was an amazing way to kick-start a career in the public service.

Ms Stuart studied a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Sociology and her studies piqued her interest in the workings of government.

“I wanted a job where I could make a real difference and produce tangible outcomes,” she said.

Ms Stuart is currently employed in the Department’s Remote Servicing Team, a role she says holds special significance for her as an Aboriginal woman.

“Being part of the Remote Servicing Team allows me to advocate for people living in remote locations, which is especially important for me as much of my family lives in these communities. Our work involves ensuring everyone receives the same standard of service, no matter where they live.”

Since completing the program, Ms Stuart has won the opportunity to act in a more senior role, something she says has allowed her to develop both professionally and personally.

“The exposure you receive as a graduate is phenomenal and there are so many great opportunities along the way. I have formed some great friendships and look forward to a long and rewarding career in the public service.

“I would definitely encourage anyone considering a career in the public service to apply for the National Graduate Program – it could change your life!”

Department of Human Services General Manager, Hank Jongen said the program is a great opportunity to play a vital role in a department that affects the majority of Australians.

“Staff at the department have different backgrounds and skill sets in a variety of specialisations. Our graduates are placed into a variety of positions, depending on their education and experience.

“The tremendously rewarding program is more than a job and offers a career pathway and the opportunity to develop leadership skills,” Mr Jongen said.

Applications for the 2018 Department of Human Services National Graduate Program close on Wednesday 26 April. For more information visit www.humanservices.gov.au/graduates
