Engadine Medicare services moving to Sutherland

A new one-stop shop offering Medicare and Centrelink services under the same roof will soon open in Sutherland for the benefit of Shire residents.

All staff offering Medicare services from the Engadine Service Centre within Engadine Town Square will relocate to the Sutherland Service Centre on Eton Street to create a one-stop shop from Monday 12 October 2015.

Department of Human Services General Manager Hank Jongen said Sutherland joins more than 200 communities around Australia with access to the department’s one-stop shops.

“This approach provides convenient, easy-to-access, coordinated services under one roof for customers in the local community,” Mr Jongen said.

“The Sutherland Service Centre has offered simple Medicare face-to-face services for several years. However, strengthening the delivery of Medicare services in the area reflects the continuing demand for customers to access more government services from a single point.

“It also acknowledges the significant changes in the way customers are choosing to claim their Medicare rebate these days, and there has been a decrease in demand for Medicare services in Engadine thanks to the introduction of a range of alternative claiming options.

“Since the move away from offering Medicare cash rebates in 2012, the number of people visiting the Engadine Service Centre has reduced by a third.

“This reduction in foot traffic combined with the end of our lease at the Engadine Town Square shopping centre, has contributed to the decision to consolidate our services into the Sutherland Service Centre.”

Mr Jongen encouraged Shire residents to process routine rebate items straight from the doctor’s surgery, as nationally, more than 95% of all Medicare claims are now lodged at the point of service.

“Local residents keen to do their routine government business where and when it suits them are encouraged to check out the range of digital services available through myGov and the Department of Human Services’ Express Plus apps,’ Mr Jongen said.

“However, staff at Sutherland will always be available to provide face-to-face services to people who require more intensive or personalised support.”

The Sutherland Service Centre is located at 36 Eton Street and is open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
