“Our Financial Information Service runs free and impartial seminars across Australia and covers a range of topics,” Justin said.

“Although we’re not financial advisors, we can provide information to help people understand money and their own financial situation. You can call us to arrange a one-on-one appointment if you can’t make it to a seminar in your area.”

The department has several podcasts available for people nearing or coming into retirement. The latest podcast is specifically about money matters.

“Surprisingly, we’ve had a lot of questions about winning money or the lottery,” Justin said.

“The big issue is that people don’t realise this money could affect their pension.”

Listen to the podcast to hear more about the following topics:

  • Gifting and lending money
  • Borrowing money
  • Winning money and inheritance, and
  • Adding to superannuation.
